Bullying and Violence Prevention Bullying and School Violence Prevention NOTE: To most effectively impact your school and community to radical change, all components of the program are crucial to obtain the best results for our youth, schools and communities. OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM The foundation of our program is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program which involves everyone who comes into contact with students--teachers, administrators, support staff, cafeteria workers, custodians and parents. Focusing on students aged 6 to 15, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program works on four levels at once: At the school level, educators form a bullying prevention coordinating committee, administer the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire, introduce rules against bullying, and train staff members about bullying and how to effectively address it. A kick-off event, often involving students and parents, launches the school-wide program. At the classroom level, teachers hold regular class meetings to talk about bullying issues and establish rules against bullying. These rules are posted throughout the school and consistently enforced. At the individual level, educators meet with students who bully others, students who are bullied, and the involved parents. In addition, staff members intervene on the spot when bullying takes place. At the community level, messages about bullying prevention are featured on billboards, in the local news, and other public media. Community members are also invited to join the bullying prevention coordinating committee. ''When well implemented, the program communicates a consistent anti-bullying message across many different levels and contexts,'' Olweus says. ''This will gradually change the school culture in dramatic ways, providing fewer opportunities and rewards for bullying behavior.'' Based on over 35 years of international research, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program was developed by Dr. Dan Olweus - a pioneer in bullying prevention research. Its goals are to: Reduce existing bully/victim problems among elementary, middle and junior high school children Prevent the development of new bully/victim problems Improve peer relations at school by creating conditions that encourage students to respect each other and function better while on or off school grounds This nationally and internationally acclaimed program has produced amazing results in schools around the country and globe, effectively reducing bullying and school violence by 30 - 70%! The Olweus program is recognized as an exemplary program by SAMSHA and recognized as one of only 11 Blueprints for Violence Prevention by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence.
